What is Halloween?
October is the peak season for witches, ghosts, spirits and all who love to shudder, for 31 October is Halloween.
Originally, hundreds of years ago, Halloween was an autumn festival of the Druids in ancient England. It was the only night of the year, the people believed then flesh around the haunted witches and ghosts on earth.
Almost every child knows that Halloween has something to do with ghosts, witches, and dressing up, but hardly anyone has a clue what it really is with the party, halloween ‘now up.
Even 2000 years ago, the Celts celebrated in ancient England (UK today say that) at the end of the summer a great celebration – at that time it was still, Samhain ‘. The 31 October was among the Celts, the last day of the year, because they had a different calendar than we do today. The summer was passed by large fires, while welcoming the winter. The people thanked their sun god (with name, Samhain ‘) for the harvest that they had introduced in the warm season and remembered on this day the souls of the dead. The sun god was now, at the beginning of the dark winter time of the Celtic god of the dead, replaced.
The Celts believed firmly that the souls of the deceased on the night of 31 October come back to earth as a ghost to return to their homes. But what about the spirits and homeless souls, the path is not found, despite the large fires that were sparked by the wayside and desperately astray? Of them no good was to be expected, they haunted by the night, terrified peaceful people and roamed with them.
Several centuries later, about 800 AD, the Pope appointed the firstNovember so the day after 31 October to the holiday, All Saints’, where the Christian martyrs was intended. From the Samhain festival, the festival was over time, on the eve of All Saints’, which means in English, All Hallows’ Evening ‘or abbreviated Hallows’ E’en’. Meanwhile, we say Halloween.
Although the Samhain festival has been so long, dress up the kids today as creepy characters such as ghosts, witches, wizards or vampires to deter spirits. And that’s a good thing – because who knows exactly because even if the ancient Celts in England were not right ..
