The Arsenal Football Club was founded as a workers’ team under the name “Dial Square”. This precursor of the club had, however, quite apart from the lack of professionalism at that time, also geographically very little to do with today’s venue in North London. Nevertheless find yourself in the history of the traditional club some interesting constants.
FIFA.com takes a look at a team that has been playing continuously since 90 years in the English top flight football and regularly celebrates major title wins.
The Birth of an institution
“Dial Square” was founded as a workers’ team a weapons factory in Woolwich and debuted in 1886 with a 6-0 victory against Eastern Wanderers. The team soon as Royal Arsenal made a name for himself roamed almost the entire south-east of the English capital, where it caused a stir in local tournaments. After the first two strong seasons in the FA Cup, the team to beat a path to professional business decision. However, this decision met with rejection in the English capital, so that the crew of the London Football Association was blocked for regional competitions.
Woolwich Arsenal as the team is called in the meantime, continued to defend himself against this decision and was accepted as the first team from the south in the Football League. Some players, however, appeared dissatisfied and told himself away from their club. After surviving bankruptcy and the much-criticized move to Highbury in north London Arsenal succeeded (the name Woolwich fell away in 1914) 1919 for the second time promotion to the first division, where the team is a constant magnitude since.
The making of a legend
Herbert Chapman, who took over the affairs of the association in 1925, Arsenal eventually led finally to the top. As a pioneer on and off the field, the pioneer from Yorkshire in the 30s won five championships and three FA Cups with the Gunners. This dominance was above all due to the dream storm where Joe Hulme, Jack Lambert, David Jack, Cliff Bastin, Ted Drake and Alex James were particularly active.
In the 40s and 50s, each another title followed in the English league, as the team empty-handed in the following decade. Beginning of the 70s the tradition of the north London club are reported but returned with full force. First, Bob Wilson, Frank McLintock, led George Graham and Charlie George to the team winning the Fairs Cup in 1970. Only a year later, the team of Bertie Mee won a second team in the 20 Century, the “double” league and FA Cup and drew with it the same with the arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Apart from the superior winning the FA Cup in the 1978/79 season, which especially the parades of the circuit’s Pat Jennings , the defense power of the defender David O’Leary’s elegant and technically savvy occurrence of midfielder Liam Brady was due, brought the remaining decade, however, no further success. The following two decades should be determined by two outstanding but very different teams.
The first team was the handwriting of George Graham , who, after his commitment in 1986 with Lee Dixon , Tony Adams sent a seemingly insurmountable defense on the field, Steve Bould and Nigel Winterburn. Along with game designer David Rocastle , winger Paul Merson and striker Alan Smith in 1989 they took the title in the English league. In the tabloids, but especially Michael Thomas was celebrated. Arsenal needed to win on the final day of the season by two goals at Liverpool to snatch the hosts on goal difference the championship in his face. This goal for the Gunners already seemed almost unattainable, as the midfielder scored the dramatic goal in the history of the English league and practical with the final whistle got the 2-0 win.
Arsenal repeated the 1991 title win in the English Premier League and won after a goal from Alan Smith and the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen against AC Parma. With David Seaman , who excelled in goal behind a solid defense, the team had to be accused by the opposing fans again and again to show boring football, and from his own fans, at least in miracles striker Ian Wright had their joy, the games always to win 1-0.
The result sober Football under Graham, however, ended in 1996, when Arsene Wenger took over the team and advocated attacking football. With Dennis Bergkamp , Patrick Vieira , Emmanuel Petit , Marc Overmars , Freddie Ljungberg, Thierry Henry and Robert Pires led the Frenchman Arsenal in 1998 and 2002 to win the “Doubles” from Premier League title and FA Cup, and won in 2004 another league title.
The current situation
In the 2004/05 season Arsenal finished behind Chelsea in second place in the domestic league. In the years that followed two times the fourth and one third place. Wenger’s team reached the final of the 2006 UEFA Champions League and was only 15 minutes away from winning a major European club competition, as Samuel Eto’o and Juliano Belletti but still took a 2-1 win for FC Barcelona perfect. After the departure of experienced regulars like Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry put the Gunners now more on young talent.
The stadium
The 60,355-seat Emirates Stadium is the second largest football arena in the Premier League and was inaugurated in July 2006. It replaced the Highbury Stadium, which was home of the Gunners since 1913.
