Normal to that here this week to say to each. I am at the United Nations in New York this coming week and the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women held.

International-Womens-Day-2013

More than 6,000 women (and men!) From around the world have gathered here to talk about stopping violence against women and girls. Violence is the theme of this edition. As I write this, I’m in a session on the situation of Afghan women and girls. In speaking video young girls, children actually, how they were married, and how a mother that was narrowly averted. Obviously with all its consequences, but they could be happy retelling.

And this is just one of the many sessions that take place here. Violence against women in the Middle East, women in Vietnam, women in South America, women in Africa, it goes on. In all shapes and equally as many reasons for a thing to maintain (religion, culture) or the violence in UN agreements not categorically reject (politics, economics). Nevertheless here is not a beaten down atmosphere, on the contrary, despite the general belief that the rights of women and girls worldwide have come to be under pressure, people are generally positive and stabbing each other in their eagerness not to give and shoulders once more were underneath it.

An indispensable attitude, if you ask me, and therefore it is also good that women so often come together to share experiences, learn and charged to return home. For the same reason it is good to have an International Women’s Day. There are everywhere women and girls who need our attention and support, there are also many organizations, officials, individual men and women who daily work (want to) use. Find each other and use each other. Against a broad-based movement has no file. What reason is used.

Compared to many places in the world where women are visibly much worse off, women in the Netherlands is relatively good. In the area of legislation, we have nothing to complain about, we can on our own life and limb disposal, we enjoy teaching, have good health, a home, chances enough, little to complain about. That said, in the Netherlands, we can not say that doing everything for each other. I read on a website a ‘pay off’ – a subheading under the heading ‘International Women’ which read: A modern progressive world needs equality. A wish, a spell haste. Netherlands is a modern and progressive country. It is nice to Minister Bussemaker of Emancipation behalf of the Dutch government the UN to hear about such LGTB rights, as one of the few countries in the world speaks an authority of a country about these rights, or marital coercion-a theme that the Dutch organization Femmes for Freedom also wants to place on the international agenda. (The organization wants to go even further into the problem by speaking of marital captivity, because the problem after marriage still a step further.)

Yet there are also in the Netherlands themes that equality in the position of men and women get. There are millions of women in the Netherlands a shaky economic position and balancing them on the poverty line, still there is a pay gap, there are few women in top positions, is discriminated against on the basis of sex, pregnancy, there are alarming figures when it comes to cases of sexual harassment, assault and rape, and we in the Netherlands due to marital coercion and imprisonment.

Emancipation does not stop with legislation, but has daily care and attention. And a movement, which together every now and then. You’ll hear something and go home in good spirits.

Happy International Women’s Day, sisters!
