Algerian to top al-Qaeda in Maghreb

The Algerian Djamel Okacha is Abdel hamid Abu Zeid succeeded as commander of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in the region of the Sahara. That is an Algerian television station reported.

The French government announced yesterday that it is now certain that Abu Zeid late last month was killed in a joint operation of Chadian and French soldiers in the north of Mali. The President of Chad, the death of Abu Zeid previously reported.

The 34-year-old Okacha, also known as Abu Yahia Al Hamam, came nine years ago in the terrorist movement. He has according to a source with knowledge of actions of AQIM in 2005 participated in an attack on a barracks in Mauritania and was also involved in the murder of the American worker Christopher Leggett 4 years later.
